About
The character 唛 (mà) is a phono-semantic compound created as a phonetic loan for the English word "mark" in trade. It combines the mouth radical 口 (kǒu), a sign of transliteration, with the phonetic 麦 (mài), the simplified form of traditional 麥 (mài). Coined in the mercantile hubs of southern China, it was used to denote shipping marks, brand names, and cargo designations. Having no indigenous classical meaning, it functions entirely as a modern commercial adaptation.
