About

The character (mà) is a phono-semantic compound created as a phonetic loan for the English word "mark" in trade. It combines the mouth radical (kǒu), a sign of transliteration, with the phonetic (mài), the simplified form of traditional (mài). Coined in the mercantile hubs of southern China, it was used to denote shipping marks, brand names, and cargo designations. Having no indigenous classical meaning, it functions entirely as a modern commercial adaptation.
