About

The character 圜 (huán) is a phono-semantic compound. Its outer radical 囗 (wéi), meaning an enclosure, serves as the semantic component, indicating concepts of surrounding or containing. The interior component 睘 (qióng) acts as the phonetic element, providing the pronunciation while occupying the bounded space. Historically, 圜 primarily meant a circle, the shape of the heavens in Chinese cosmology, or the act of revolving. In modern Chinese, its geometric sense has largely been replaced by the simpler character 圆 (yuán), leaving 圜 mostly for formal or classical contexts, such as the verb for surrounding an object or in specialized terms like circular currency.
