About
Drawn as an ideogram, 岳 (also the simplified form of 嶽) stacks 丘 (qiū, hill or mound) above 山 (shān, mountain), creating the image of a massive peak surrounded by hills. This transparently conveys its original meaning: a lofty mountain, especially one of China's sacred mountains. In time, the character acquired an entirely separate and common secondary meaning, a wife's parents, as in words for father-in-law and mother-in-law. Today, both the topographical and kinship senses are actively used.
