About
幕 means curtain, screen, or tent. It is a phonosemantic compound: 巾 (cloth) provides the meaning, and 莫 gives the sound. 莫 itself was originally a pictograph of the sun (日) sinking into the grass (艸), conveying the idea of dusk, but in 幕 it functions purely to indicate pronunciation. The character initially designated large pieces of heavy fabric, used to block light, partition spaces, or as temporary military shelters. Over time, the term expanded to mean the draperies that conceal scene changes on a theater stage, and later came to refer to the screens onto which films, presentations, and digital images are projected. 幕 is the simplified form of 幙.
