About
The character 淆 (xiáo) denotes confusion, impurity, or mixture. It is a phono-semantic compound: the left radical 氵 (shuǐ) gives the meaning of water, and the right component 肴 (yáo, meat or prepared food) hints at the pronunciation. In its earliest usage, 淆 referred to turbid, muddy water, clouded by sediment and thus opaque. Over time, this physical murkiness came to describe abstract situations, ideas, facts, or circumstances so jumbled and blended together that it is hard to separate truth from falsehood or distinguish elements within the chaos.
