About

涿 is a phono-semantic compound combining the water radical on the left, which suggests rivers or liquid, with the phonetic on the right. Originally meaning "drops of water falling", the character came to function almost exclusively as a proper noun for the Zhuo River and the Zhuozhou region in Hebei. The phonetic once depicted a shackled pig, but that imagery does not carry over into the character's modern sense. This geographical use appears consistently in historical texts and regional naming conventions.
