The character 版 is a phono-semantic compound. Its semantic radical 片 (piàn) depicts one half of a split log, meaning a slice or flat piece. The component 反 (fǎn, meaning opposite or to turn over) provides the phonetic value. Its original meaning was a wooden plank or board, especially those used in construction for rammed earth walls. With the development of woodblock printing, 版 came to refer to the carved wooden blocks used for printing.
