About
砫 is a phono-semantic compound that originally referred to stone ancestral tablets and, by extension, stone pillars. Its structure combines the radical 石 ('stone' or 'rock') on the left, marking the material, and the component 主 ('master, lord, main') on the right, giving the pronunciation and also hinting at something central and spiritually important. The combination points to a stone object of focal ritual importance, but the character has remained obscure, largely confined to historical and local descriptions of stone artifacts and ancestral worship practices.
