About

注 is a phono-semantic compound: the left side 氵 (water) provides the semantic category, and the right side 主 indicates the pronunciation. Its original meaning was the physical act of pouring liquid, filling a container or a stream flowing into a larger body of water. This notion of directed flow was metaphorically extended to mental focus (directing attention, concentrating effort) and to the act of annotating texts.
