About
Etymologically, 考 depicts an old man (耂, a reduced form of 老) leaning on a cane (丂), and was originally the same character as 老. In early usage it referred to an aged person or a deceased father, conveying seniority and ancestral reverence. The character was later borrowed phonetically for the unrelated sense of examining, testing, and verifying, the dominant modern meaning found in academic exams and rigorous evaluations.
