About
The character 葇 is a phono-semantic compound. The grass radical 艹 at the top places it within the semantic field of plants, herbs, and botanical species, while the lower component 柔 (róu) acts as the phonetic, giving the sound and also meaning 'soft, gentle, or flexible.' Historically, it was created specifically to denote the fragrant herbaceous plant Elsholtzia ciliata, known as Vietnamese balm, which has been employed in both traditional herbal medicine and culinary preparations. Consequently, the radical supplies the plant category, the phonetic gives the reading, and the character serves as a specialized botanical term. Today, it survives primarily in classical herbals, agricultural manuals, and traditional medical literature.
