It originated as an onomatopoeia for the heavy, continuous rumbling and clattering of wooden wheels of carts and chariots on rough roads. In classical poetry, it depicts the chaotic noise of passing troops or busy thoroughfares. The character can also denote a door threshold or the front crossbar of a traditional carriage.
