About
郃 is a phono-semantic compound with the phonetic 合 (hé) on the left supplying the sound, and the city radical 阝 (yì) on the right marking it as a place name or administrative division. Historically, it served almost exclusively as a proper noun for geographical locations and administrative units, most notably Heyang County, an ancient region in modern-day Shaanxi dating back to the Han dynasty or earlier. Its usage remains confined to historical geography, place names, and occasional surnames derived from these, so it lacks general vocabulary meanings.
