郝 is a phono-semantic compound: the left side 赤 gives the sound, while the right-ear radical 阝 (meaning "city" or "region") signals a geographical origin. It was originally the proper name of an ancient territory or administrative district in what is now Shaanxi province. As that geographic meaning disappeared, the character became solely a family name, its only function in modern Chinese.
