About
鲷, the traditional form of which is 鯝, is a phono-semantic compound. Its left component, the fish radical 鱼, provides the semantic category, while the right component, 固, gives the phonetic value. Originally, in classical texts, 鲷 referred specifically to the internal organs of a fish. Its meaning later shifted toward taxonomy, and it now primarily denotes a genus of freshwater cyprinid fish, commonly known in English as the yellowtail or xenocypris.
