About
The character 冯 is now primarily used as a common Chinese surname, but its original meaning described a horse galloping swiftly or wading through water. In its traditional form, 馮, the character combines the horse radical 馬 (mǎ) on the right with the ice radical 冫 (bīng) on the left. This ice radical, historically derived from the water radical, suggests movement across rivers or frozen surfaces. With the simplification to 冯, the traditional horse component was replaced by the simplified horse radical 马, while the ice radical remained on the left. Although the original sense of rapid horse movement is no longer in common use, the character retains its historical phonetic value and now serves almost exclusively as a family name throughout the Chinese-speaking world.
