About
呼 (hū) is a phono-semantic compound: 口 (kǒu, 'mouth') represents the meaning, and 乎 (hū) the sound. The mouth component anchors the character in actions of the mouth and vocal cords. Its core sense is exhaling air from the lungs, the direct opposite of inhaling. Beyond simple breathing, 呼 also describes forceful vocal acts, shouting loudly, calling out to someone at a distance, or crying out in distress or exertion.
