About
唢 (suǒ), the simplified form of 嗩, is a phono-semantic compound used in musical terminology. The semantic radical 口 (kǒu, mouth) indicates an association with blowing or sound production, while the right side functions as the phonetic component, derived from the character for "lock". This character was created to transcribe the name of the suona, a double-reed woodwind instrument introduced to China from Central Asia or the Middle East. As a result, it rarely stands alone and is almost exclusively found in the compound word for this loud, high-pitched traditional instrument.
