The character 熵 (shāng) is a modern scientific term created to translate the thermodynamic concept of entropy into Chinese. Structurally, it follows the phono-semantic compounding method common in physics terminology, pairing the semantic radical 火 (huǒ, fire or heat) on the left with the phonetic component 商 (shāng, meaning quotient) on the right. This combination was deliberately chosen to reflect entropy as the quotient of heat divided by temperature, making the character both phonetic and descriptive of the underlying equation. As a modern creation for the scientific lexicon, it has no classical usage, applying specifically to the measurement of thermal energy dispersal and systemic disorder.
