About
The character 茍 is often confused with a more common lookalike, but it has a distinct etymology and structure. It comprises the upper component 羊 (yáng), meaning “sheep,” above a lower section containing 勹 (bāo) and 口 (kǒu). Historically, it conveys meanings of urgency, earnestness, or rigorous self-examination. Due to its visual resemblance to other characters, 茍 is rarely used today, yet its unique combination of components reveals a separate semantic origin unrelated to the grass radical found in similar-looking characters.
