About
The character 莫 originated as a pictograph of the sun setting below the horizon, with 日 (rì) placed vertically between 艹 (cǎo) at the top and 大 (dà) below, the latter originally depicting vegetation. Since the setting sun symbolizes dusk and the fading of light, the character was later borrowed phonetically to serve as a negative pronoun and adverb meaning "none", "nothing", or "do not". To preserve the original sense of sunset, the new character 暮 (mù) was eventually formed by adding another sun radical at the bottom.
