About
鄘 is a phono-semantic compound: the right-hand radical 阝 derives from 邑, a character meaning "city" or "settlement", thus indicating a populated place, while the left component 庸 serves as the phonetic. The character is almost exclusively a historical proper noun, designating an ancient vassal state that existed during the Zhou Dynasty in the area of present-day Henan province. The combination of a territory radical with a sound marker gives the character its form, and it has not developed any figurative or extended meanings beyond its use in historical geography.
