About
鄬 is a phono-semantic compound used as a toponym. Its right side is the semantic component 阝, the compact form of 邑 meaning 'city' or 'settlement', and its left side is the phonetic 為, which provides the pronunciation. The character served as the proper name of an ancient locale or minor state in early China; since it functioned solely as a toponym, it never developed extended or metaphorical meanings. It is found mainly in historical records, genealogies, and classical geographical treatises.
