The character 镮 (huán) is the simplified form of traditional 環, combining the metal radical 钅 (jīn), indicating its semantic field of metal objects, with the phonetic component 睘 (huán). It originally denoted metal rings, such as those on sword hilts, decorative loops, or chain links. The traditional version uses the radical 金 (jīn) with the same phonetic element, meaning simplification only affected the left side. Historically, its meaning has consistently referred to circular metal fittings.
