The character 零 is a phono-semantic compound: the upper radical 雨 provides the meaning of rain, while the lower component 令 indicates the pronunciation. Its original sense described the gentle, scattered falling of raindrops, a light shower, or the shedding of tears. From this image of isolated, individual drops, the meaning expanded to denote fragments, fractions, and miscellaneous bits. This association with incompleteness eventually led to its modern mathematical use for the number zero and as a placeholder in numerical systems.
