About
The character 伲 is a phono-semantic compound: the 亻 radical on the left means 'person,' while the 尼 on the right is phonetic, normally a 'Buddhist nun' but here serving only as a sound marker. It occurs almost exclusively in Wu dialects, particularly Shanghainese, as the first-person plural pronoun 'we' or 'us.' Due to this regional specificity, it is seldom seen in standard Mandarin outside of intentional transcriptions of local speech or literature.
