About

侨 is a phono-semantic compound with the radical 亻 (person) on the left and 乔 (qiáo) as the phonetic component on the right. Its traditional form, 僑, uses the more complex 呂 for the same phonetic function. The character originally meant to lodge temporarily or sojourn abroad as a guest. This sense of residing away from one's homeland evolved into its primary modern meaning: an expatriate or emigrant living permanently in a foreign country while maintaining ties to their ancestral roots.
