About
The character 印 (yìn) is composed of the upper part 爪 (zhuǎ, representing a downward-facing hand or claw) and the lower-right part 卩 (jié, depicting a kneeling person). It originally depicted a scene of a hand pressing down on a kneeling person's head to signify an act of submission or pressing down. Its structural meaning gradually focused on the act of applying downward pressure to leave a mark, which gave rise to its core historical meaning: an official seal, signet, or stamp used to authenticate documents. With the advent of modern reproduction technologies, the meaning of yìn naturally expanded to encompass printing, typographical impressing, and various other forms of leaving visible traces or imprints on a surface.
