About
The simplified character 乌 (wū) is the simplified form of traditional 烏, a pictograph that originally depicted a crow in profile. It closely resembles 鸟 (niǎo), the character for bird, but with a deliberate omission: the dot that represents the eye in 鸟 is absent in 乌. The traditional explanation for this missing eye is that a crow's glossy black plumage camouflages its eyes entirely, making them invisible. As a result, 乌 carries the primary meaning of "crow", and from this it has extended to function as an adjective for the color black, deep darkness, or obscurity.
