The character 褏 is an archaic structural variant of 袖 (xiù), meaning "sleeve". It is a phono-semantic compound arranged vertically, with the clothing radical 衣 (yī) at the bottom providing the semantic category, and a phonetic element related to 秀 (xiù) on top. This form historically referred to the arm-covering part of a robe. It was later replaced by the more common 袖, a left-to-right compound using the simplified clothing radical 衤 and the phonetic component 由 (yóu). Consequently, 褏 fell out of use, surviving only as a historical orthographic form.
