About
褏 is a historical variant of 袖, both meaning 'sleeve'. It is a top-to-bottom phono-semantic compound: the lower component is the clothing radical 衣 (yī), and the upper part is a phonetic element derived from 秀 (xiù). Originally, this vertical arrangement denoted the sleeve of a robe. Over time, it was supplanted by the structurally simpler left-to-right character 袖, which pairs the clothing radical 衤 with the phonetic 由 (yóu). Today, 褏 survives only as an archaic orthographic variant.
