About
垄 is a phono-semantic compound: 土 (tǔ, "earth") gives the meaning, and 龙 (lóng, "dragon") indicates the sound. It is the simplified form of 壟, which places the traditional dragon character 龍 above the earth radical. The character originally denoted a raised ridge of earth in a field, an artificial mound, or an embankment used in agriculture. Later it acquired the economic sense of monopoly or cornering a market, derived from the notion of occupying a high ridge to dominate commerce.
