Pictograph of an arrow hitting its target.
About
The character "至" originated from a depiction of an arrow hitting a target, conveying its early meaning of "to arrive" or "to reach". In its contemporary structure, it is analyzed as being composed of "一" positioned above "土", an interpretation that arose later and does not reflect its original pictorial form. Over time, the semantic range of "至" expanded from indicating physical arrival to denoting abstract concepts of extremity or the highest degree, such as in compounds like "至宝" for "most valuable treasure" or "至理" for "ultimate principle". This character has the same form in both traditional and simplified Chinese, without a distinct simplified version.
