社 is composed of the left-side radical 礻 (shì), relating to gods, spirits, or altars, and the right-side component 土 (tǔ) meaning earth. Together they originally depicted a deity of the soil. In early agricultural times, the character referred to the local land god or the earthen altar where worshippers sought bountiful harvests. Because communal festivals gathered around these altars, the meaning shifted from the shrine to the congregation, and subsequently to any organized association, agency, or society as a whole.
