The character 嫘 is composed of the 女 (woman) radical on the left, which in early Chinese scripts frequently indicates female names or kinship terms, and the phonetic 累 on the right. Its use is almost entirely restricted to the name of Leizu, the legendary wife of the Yellow Emperor, who is said to have invented sericulture. Because of this unique historical and mythological tie, the character has no independent meaning outside of that proper noun and never appears in common vocabulary.
