About
杨 (traditional form: 楊) represents the poplar or willow tree. It is a phono-semantic compound, using the wood radical 木 on the left to signal its botanical category, while the right side in the traditional character is the phonetic component 昜. In the simplified script, this complex right side is replaced by a much simpler element consisting of a horizontal stroke and a downward-turning stroke, which greatly reduces the number of strokes. Although its original meaning was botanical, 杨 is now predominantly a common Chinese surname, with its tree association serving largely as a historical footnote.
