About

The character 涡 (traditional form 渦) is a phono-semantic compound. Its left side, the water radical 氵, indicates the meaning relates to water. The right side, 呙 (simplified) or 咼 (traditional), provides the pronunciation. Originally, it meant a water whirlpool or eddy. The meaning later extended to describe any spiral or vortex shape, such as swirling air currents or spiral structures in the inner ear.
