As a phono-semantic compound, 罘 is formed with the semantic radical 罒 (a variant of the net radical) atop the phonetic component 不. The character originally denoted a type of hunting net used for catching rabbits or similar small game. It is also a key component in the name of Zhifu Island in Shandong Province, which accounts for most of its contemporary usage.
