About
赂 (lù) is a phono-semantic compound combining the radical 贝 (bèi, "cowrie shell", signifying money or wealth) with the phonetic 各 (gè). Originally it meant giving property or valuables as a gift, but over time the sense narrowed to bribery , offering money or favors to corruptly influence officials or gain unfair advantages. The traditional form 賂 retains the full radical 貝, while the simplified character reduces it to 贝.
