About
罪 combines the net radical 罒 (from 网 'net') and the phonetic component 非 (fēi). Its original meaning is 'fishing net'; the modern senses of crime, guilt, and punishment come from a phonetic loan. The word for crime was earlier written 辠, but because 辠 resembled 皇 (emperor), 罪 was borrowed to replace it and avoid a taboo. Today the character denotes crime, sin, guilt, or the suffering caused by unlawful acts.
