队 is the simplified form of 隊. In the traditional character, 阝 (fù, 'mound' or 'hill') indicates the meaning, and 㒸 (suì) gives the sound; the simplification replaces 㒸 with 人 (rén, 'person'). Originally it meant falling from a height, a sense later taken over by another character, after which the primary meaning shifted to an organized group of people, a military unit, team, squad, or line.
