About
鲀 is the character for pufferfish (blowfish or globefish), marine fish infamous for inflating their bodies and their poisonous internal organs. It consists of the semantic radical 鱼 (fish) on the left, marking the biological category, and the phonetic component 屯 on the right, which gives the sound. The traditional version, 魨, replaces the simplified radical with the full 魚 while keeping the same phonetic. Strictly biological and culinary in scope, the character is used in taxonomy and in contexts involving the expert preparation required to serve this toxic fish as food.
