Depicts a recently germinated plant. Based on the original meaning "sprout". The meaning later expanded to "gather", "guard", "station", and "village".
About
The character 屯 is a pictograph of a recently germinated plant pushing its way upward through the earth, originally meaning "sprout". The effort of the shoot to break through the soil suggested accumulation and pressure, so the meaning expanded to "gather", "amass", and "store". In military language, this idea of massing forces led to the senses of stationing troops and setting up a guard, "station" and "guard". Eventually, the term for a fortified camp came to mean any village or farming community where people live clustered together.
