About

The character 儒 is a phono-semantic compound with the radical 亻 (person) on the left and the phonetic component 需 on the right. It originally referred to a scholar or ritual expert, sometimes with an implication of physical frailty compared to martial figures. After Confucius and the rise of his school, its meaning narrowed to denote a Confucian scholar or the ideology of Confucianism. The phonetic element 需, meaning "need", does not contribute to these scholarly or philosophical senses.
