The modern character 冲 is a simplification that merges two traditional characters: 沖 and 衝. 沖 pairs the water radical 氵 with the phonetic 中, originally meaning to pour water, rinse, or wash away. 衝 features the radical 行 (crossroads) enclosing the phonetic 重; it first designated a thoroughfare, later acquiring the sense of dashing, colliding, or charging. The simplified form 冲 is itself a phonosemantic compound: the ice radical 冫 hints at the meaning, and 中 provides the sound. 冲 now covers both flushing with liquid and rushing forward with force.
