About
卦 (guà) refers to the divinatory trigrams and hexagrams fundamental to ancient Chinese philosophy, cosmology, and fortune-telling. It is a phonosemantic compound: the right side is 卜 (bǔ), the radical for divination (originally the reading of cracks in heated bones), which gives the meaning; the left side is 圭 (guī), a jade tablet used in rituals, which provides the sound and also reinforces the ceremonial context. Over time, the character became inextricably linked with the I Ching (Book of Changes), where specific combinations of broken and solid lines are used to interpret cosmic forces, natural elements, and philosophical changes.
