About
The character 宗 (zōng) is formed by the components 宀 (mián, a roof or building) and 示 (shì, an altar or spirit tablet). Together they depict a spiritual edifice, an ancestral shrine where offerings and worship took place. Originally designating this physical temple, the meaning gradually came to be associated with the ancestors venerated there, and subsequently with the clan or lineage as a whole. Over time, 宗 also extended to represent a sect or school of thought, especially in Buddhism, as well as a guiding aim, purpose, or model. Thus, from a concrete place of worship, the character's scope widened to abstract concepts of kinship, religious doctrine, and fundamental principles.
