Etymology
About
The character 廉 combines the shelter radical 广, indicating a building, with the component 兼, which provides its phonetic element. Originally, it referred to the side or corner of a structure. This sense of a sharp, clean edge later extended metaphorically to describe human virtues, signifying uprightness and integrity, and eventually also came to mean inexpensive.
