The simplified character 录 derives from the traditional 錄, a phonosemantic compound that pairs the metal radical 金 (metal) with the phonetic 彔. Its original meanings referred to the color of a particular metal and to the carving or casting of inscriptions onto metal objects. When the character was simplified, the 金 radical was removed, and the phonetic component took its modern form: 彐 above a variant of 水. The meaning then broadened from the physical act of inscribing on metal to the general ideas of recording, writing down, and copying text, and later to audio and video recording.
