The character 戬, with its traditional form 戩, combines the semantic radical 戈 (halberd or weapon) with the phonetic component 晋 (simplified) or 晉 (traditional). The weapon radical originally pointed to meanings related to destruction or cutting off, often in a military context. Over time, however, the character developed a secondary sense of perfection or blessing. Today it appears mainly in classical texts or as part of the name of the mythological figure Erlang Shen, also called Yang Jian.
